It has been a controversy for quite some time in sports.  The mascot name of the NFL team in Washingtion is "The Redskins" which many have found offensive.

It looks as though that will be changing later today.  After a request from FedEx and other major sponsors, The Washington Redskins are about to change their name.

Fans took to Twitter last night and had their team chant "Hail To The Redskins" trending.  That would be comparable to us saying "Let's Go Buffalo!"  This came after the Redskins organization announced their intent to change their name.

Can you imagine waking up one day with the same owners, coaches, stadium and players, but cheering them on as someone other than The Bills?  How strange!

There is no word as of right now what the new name will be, however, we can assume there will be a whole overhaul of the look of this team.  With a new name, there will probably have to be a new logo.  Will their colors still be maroon and gold?  Will the uniforms change?  Or just the logo?  Will the name still have 'red' in it?  Redtails, Redhawks, Redwolves?  Will it still be a Native American theme?  Warriors?

Head coach Ron Rivera said, "This issue is of personal importance to me and I look forward to working closely with Dan Snyder to make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our military.’"

We should be hearing from Dan Snyder, the owner of the (current) Redskins as to what all will be changing later today.

The last team to change their name in the NFL is the team that is currently known as the Tennessee Titans.  They were known as the Tennessee Oilers prior to the change after holding on to that mascot when the franchise moved there from Houston.
