There’s a Push To Change The U.S. National Anthem to “America The Beautiful”

According to WIVB, there's a push by some Americans to change the country's national anthem from "The Star-Spangled Banner" to "America the Beautiful."

A petition was started at change.org and cites the writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner" was a slave owner (Francis Scott Key).

Not only that, but that Key defended slave owners' rights, according to a report by The Smithsonian.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" was officially made the United States national anthem in 1931, over 100 years after Key wrote the poem, “Defence of Fort M’Henry," for which the lyrics were used for "The Star-Spangled Banner."

The petition started claims that the anthem, "“contains racism, elitism and even sexism embedded in its third and fourth stanzas.”

The petition also claims that the song doesn't exemplify American values of brotherhood, unity and patriotism.
