Another sign that winter is almost here is the Ice Boom going into Lake Erie. The Ice Boom is set up to prevent ice from the Lake getting into the Niagara River that could result in ice jams and shoreline erosion.

According to the Buffalo News,

"The installation of the 1.7-mile boom – which stretches from Buffalo to Fort Erie, Ont., across the mouth of Lake Erie – has happened each winter since 1964."

This Buffalo News also noted it is the earliest the Lake has hit 39 degrees, which is the signal to get the boom into the water, since 2014.

As much as the installation marks the sign of winter in WNY, the boom also is there to tell us when winter is over and spring has arrived! We'll look forward to the next time the Ice Boom makes the news!
