If you live in the area of the Tonawanda Coke plant, you have seen lots of activity recently. Many tests are being conducted on the soil in the neighborhood.

Is the soil safe? According to reports, perhaps not.

According to Metro Source News:

Researchers say tainted soil has been discovered near the site of Tonawanda Coke.   The contamination was found in neighborhoods located in the Town of Tonawanda, City of Tonawanda and Grand Island.

Researchers will now see what chemicals may have come from the Tonawanda Coke location.

The study by scientists from the University at Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia found elevated levels of toxins in the soil including lead, mercury, arsenic, cyanide and PCBs.

This is in addition to the fear that those who live in that neighborhood have had about the poor air quality that initially shut down operation at Tonawanda Coke.
