The current limit for blood alcohol content in New York State is .08 but some lawmakers are trying to get that changed to an even lower limit.

According to WIVB, Assemblyman Felix Ortiz and Senator John Liu are proposing to lower the limit from .08 to .05. New York would become just the second state to do so.

Other countries have a BAC limit of .05 and some lawmakers say they have fewer drunk driving crashes.

A recent study that was published in the Traffic Prevention Injury Journal found that four drinks for a 170-pound man in just two hours exceeded .05 and three drinks for a 137-pound woman. Drinking the same amount in one hour exceeds .08.

Assemblyman Felix Ortiz says the bill has potential to be passed this time around after failed attempts in the past.
