Niagara County Ramping Up DWI Checks For Halloween Weekend

While coronavirus has put a cap on traditional Halloween activities, law enforcement is still planning to be out this weekend looking for impaired drivers.

WGRZ reports the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the statewise STOP-DWI Halloween Crackdown, a “special enforcement effort to crackdown on impaired driving this weekend.”

Statewide, drivers can expect to come across STOP-DWI checkpoints beginning on Friday, October 30 through on Sunday, November 1.

“The STOP-DWI Halloween Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.” –WGRZ

More information can be found on the STOP-DWI New York website, which offers some sobering statistics on impaired driving in the state.

The costs associated with DWI include fines ranging from $300 to $10,000; with estimates of the total financial cost of a typical DWI to be $4,000 to $15,000.

If you’ve had too much to drink, the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee urges New Yorkers to use their Have A Plan mobile app, which helps you to “locate and call a taxi service, program a designated-driver list, educate yourself on Blood Alcohol Content levels  as well as information on DWI laws and penalties or even report a suspected impaired driver.”

The app is available for Apple and Android smartphones.
