If a new piece of legislation makes it through the New York State Assembly, soon tanning beds could be off-limits for anyone under the age of 18.

WGRZ reports, "Current law already bars anyone 16 or younger from tanning booths, which expose users to ultraviolet radiation and can increase the risk of skin cancer." The state senate is the next step for the proposed ban, says WGRZ, and mentions the regulations have the support of the American Cancer Society.

According to the American Cancer Society, "Studies have found using a tanning bed before the age 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 59%."
