Every year we ring in the new year at midnight and with that comes champagne, kissing and confetti. It also means new laws starting that very second.

Each year thousands of laws are passed across the country and some are ridiculous, hilarious and strand, but they all still do serve a purpose. JACK broke down all the laws in New York State you need to know for the new year.

    What is minimum wage in New York?

    Effective January 1, 2015 it will increase from $800 to $8.75.

    Credit Security for Minors

    Credit record freezes will be extended to protect minors. Parents can now place a freeze on the credit record of a child under the age of 16 to prevent their being victim of identity theft.

    Medicaid Cap

    Every year it has gone up $182 million in NY. There's a cap now starting in 2015 and county costs to support the state and federal Medicaid program won't go up.

    Don't Throw Out Electronics!

    New laws will prevent you from throwing away laptops, gaming consoles and other electronics. Violators will be charged $100 for each infraction.

    Tax Incentives

    Businesses can receive a tax credit for hiring and employing a qualified veteran and will be available for those who employ individuals with developmental disabilities.
