On Wednesday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul were in Niagara Falls making a pretty big announcement.

That the city of Niagara Falls had been awarded the top prize of $10 million. The money comes a program called the "Downtown Revitalization Initiative", according to WIVB.

Niagara Falls submitted ten good ideas for improving the city's bridge district, near the Whirlpool Bridge. Those ideas were impressive enough to win them the money.

Now it's on Niagara Falls to spend that money the best way possible. Over the next eight months to a year, a local planning committee will decide on how to spend the state money.

“Where the DRI is gonna be most effective is in a place where there’s a social need that meets up with the market opportunity, and that’s exactly what you’ve got in the Bridge District along Main Street," said Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster.

Gov. Cuomo said there were 10 winning spots and the Falls won out on the top prize.
