Many wondered if he would re-sign, and thankfully he has for the long run.

Over the years, Buffalo has had some legendary sports figures. Jim Kelly. Dominik Hasek. Thurman Thomas. Gilbert Perrault. Ryan Fitzpatrick... OK, Ryan isn't legendary but he's beloved, to say the least. Hall of fame players and coaches are a regular occurrence in the City of Good Neighbors. It's always nice to see them stick around, as well.

The Buffalo Bandits won the NLL championship this past season. It's the 5th world championship they've earned since their inception in 1992. It also avenged their finals loss from the year before. The Buffalo Bandits are the only Buffalo team in the modern age to win a world championship.

They have featured all-time great lacrosse players like John Tavares, who many consider the greatest lacrosse player ever. A current member of the team is also in discussion for the greatest ever, and that's Dhane Smith. Smith holds several NLL records, has been the league MVP, and was this year's NLL Cup MVP. The 31-year-old native of Kitchener, Ontario, has played all of his indoor lacrosse in Buffalo, and now it looks like he will likely retire here.

Smith has signed a new 5-year contract with the Buffalo Bandits.

Lacrosse is a BIG deal in Buffalo. Fans regularly fill KeyBank Arena, the home of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, for regular season games, let alone playoffs. Smith is one of the greatest Buffalo sports figures ever and Banditland is umped that he is staying.

Relive the championship win...
