The movement on the part of The Federation of Italian American Societies of WNY is significant seeing as Christopher Columbus is of Italian descent, and historically has been a revered figure in Italian culture and heritage.

In The Federation of Italian American Societies of WNY's proposal remove the statue, they are also requesting that the name of the park be changed. This is what they wrote as it appears on their petition on Change.org:

We demand that the name of Columbus Park be changed! We demand that the statue of Columbus be removed! We demand that you consult Native communities in renaming the park!

Mayor Byron Brown has already been in contact with the city council in regards to bringing forth legislation to change the park's name, and to replace the statue with a new symbol of Italian heritage.

Kudos to The Federation of Italian American Societies of WNY for their humble initiative in accordance with the many acts around the country regarding change and inclusion of all lives and backgrounds in America.
