Buffalo Sabres Trade for A Defenseman

With the NHL trade deadline looming at 3 pm on Monday, the Buffalo Sabres finalized a trade on Sunday with the Anaheim Ducks to acquire a defenseman.  Coming to the Sabres is 24-year old Brandon Montour who has 5 goals and 20 assists in 62 games for the Ducks this season.

In exchange for Montour the Sabres send defenseman Brendan Guhle and a 2018 first round draft pick to the Ducks.  That first round pick will be one of the three the Sabres had and it'll be one of the picks they acquired from either St. Louis or San Jose acquired in earlier deals.

In a statement Buffalo Sabres general manager Jason Botterill said, "Brandon is a young, offensive-minded defenseman who can play the up-tempo style we are looking to play. He’s a right-shot defenseman that brings additional playoff experience to our club.”  He's a good puck-moving defenseman, the type coach Phil Housley can use in his system.

Montour was a second-round pick of the Ducks in 2014 and was in his third season with the Ducks.  He'll have one more year on his contract before he becomes a restricted free agent after the end of the 2019-2020 season.
