If you've been on Facebook, you may have seen the blue-green algae scare for dogs, especially in the southern states lately where it has cause multiple dog deaths.

Double check the DEC map to make sure that there is no blue-green algae in the freshwater stream or pond you dog is about to go in.

Algal blooms tend to thrive in high temperatures and after heavy rains carry fertilizer runoff and sewage into waterways.

The health threats to animals range from skin rashes to neurological problems. The blooms can release toxins that can cause liver damage, lead to respiratory paralysis or produce other fatal conditions", according to The New York Times.

As for humans, it could make you sick, but not necessarily deadly. If you look at the DEC map that they have created, you can keep tabs on which Western New York ponds and streams may be affected.
