According to the official rules of the National Dog Show, in order to win the Best in Show,  a dog must first be judged "Best of Show" of many dog shows of its same breed before competing in the National Dog Show.

For the National Dog Show, dogs are sorted into one of seven groups: sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting and herding. When a dog wins the Best of Group Award, they go on to compete against the other group winners for Best of Show.
