Long before cable and satellite (and streaming) were mainstream things, 80's kids relied on the actual antennae to see what was on TV.

And for kids in Western New York, with our broadcast proximity to the border, we were treated with a steady stream of entertainment courtesy of the CBC.

Here's a look back at 6 shows you definitely watched if you're in your 40's now.

1. Mr. Dressup

On the air from 1967 to 1996, Mr. Dressup took kids on imagination adventures, full of weird props and weirder puppets. But we loved it. I mean, have you seen what some kids watch on YouTube these days?

2. Street Cents

Personally, I loved this group of tweens and how they made "cents" of the adult world they'd soon be part of. The intro song will definitely take you back.

3. Owl/TV

I always loved the way the animation had a super 70's influenced aesthetic, like one day that owl was gonna strap on some roller skates and twirl into a disco. On the air from 1985 to 1990, Owl/TV was rebooted a few times on different networks between 1990 and 1994.

4. Square One

If there was ever a way to perfectly describe children's television in the 1980s, I believe Square One is it. Employing all the high-tech TV tricks of its time, this creation from Children's Television Workshop -- the same creators of Sesame Street -- kids learned math and science and they liked it.

5. Fred Penner's Place

Fred Penner's Place aired on the CBC starting in 1985, and in 1987 became part of the Nickelodeon network's original lineup of programs. I thought this was really cool, because I could see double Fred Penner's Place on two different channels -- child mind blown. Without a doubt, Fred Penner helped many a musical theatre child find him/herself.

6. Sharon, Lois & Bram's Elephant Show

While we're on the topic of wholesome Canadian musical delights, our list wouldn't be close to complete without the inclusion of this human trio and their Elephant friend -- who only ever responded with the sound of a tuba. Sharon, Lois & Bram's Elephant show aired on the CBC from 1984 to 1989.
