Chauvin had originally been charged with manslaughter on Friday, and later third-degree murder.  The other three officers (Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng) who helped hold down Floyd and later watched as Chauvin continued to kneel on Floyd's neck (despite his pleas for breath) initially had no charges brought against them. All four officers had been fired on May 26th once video of Floyd's death went viral on social media.

The new charges come on the heels of protests across the country, including a number of violent conflicts between police and protestors. Floyd's death was ruled a homicide during the official autopsy released by Hennepin County in Minnesota.
