The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers is my new favorite movie subtitle. Sorry, Electric Boogaloo. You have been replaced.

TDTSotHS is the subtitle for 12 Strong a war film based on true events from the early days of the War on Terror. Chris Hemsworth stars as the leader of a group of troops sent on a mission of huge importance. Michael Shannon and Michael Peña also star, and the film was co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who, as the trailer reminds you, was one of the men behind Black Hawk Down. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. In addition to overcoming mutual distrust and a vast cultural divide, the Americans—accustomed to state-of-the-art warfare—must adopt the rudimentary tactics of the Afghani horse soldiers. But despite their uneasy bond, the new allies face overwhelming odds: outnumbered and outgunned by a ruthless enemy that does not take prisoners.

I’m not familiar with this director, Nicolai Fuglsig, who’s a relative newcomer. A lot of the movie’s success will depend on how he arranges, shoots, and cuts these war scenes. Hemsworth is a dependable hero, and I’m interested to see him play opposite Shannon. 12 Strong: The Declassified True Story of the Horse Soldiers opens in theaters on January 19, 2018.
