You’re From Where?! 5 Historical Facts About Buffalo

I live in Buffalo, and most likely you're from here — or the surrounding areas — too if you're reading this blog or listening to Jack FM on the radio. We know where Buffalo is on the map, and most likely, you will know we're the second-most populated city in the state of New York next to New York City.

But I have to tell you, it's quite alarming when I travel to places like Philadelphia or Detroit and people think Buffalo is a suburb of NYC or — even more disturbing — have never heard of Buffalo (GASP!).

Let's see, we can tell people that we originated around 1789, planted in the western area of New York state on the shores of Lake Erie, and, during the industrial boom at the dawn of the 20th century, grew into a major steel and manufacturing area. Buffalo is pretty darn historical, too, so let's explore some facts about the Nickel City.

Buffalo was home to the 1901 Pan-American Exposition.

President William McKinley, our 25th president, was assassinated in Buffalo.

Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition and died eight days later.

Buffalo was an end point for the Underground Railroad in the 19th century.

African-American slaves stopped here, then crossed into Canada to seek freedom.

Grover Cleveland was mayor of Buffalo before becoming President of the United States.

His former hunting lodge now houses Grover’s Bar & Grill on Transit Road.

Theodore Roosevelt’s improvised inauguration took place in Buffalo.

It was performed at Ansley Wilcox’s home, less than 24 hours after President William McKinley’s death.
