The Las Vegas Golden Knights took Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night with a 6-4 win over the Washington Capitals as the year's most incredible sports story continues to evolve.  Good for them.  The Knights play with passion and chemistry and it continues to show what hard work will do.

But with every victory it just adds to the frustration of Sabres fans who've been waiting 48 years for a championship.  It just doesn't seem fair.  The series isn't over, but you've got to hand it to the Knights for everything they've done in their very first year.

The Knights not only put together a great hockey team, but their in-game fan experience is probably the best in the league.  It makes the Sabres look like amateurs.  The Knights put on a spectacular show on and off the ice.  What's the Sabres idea of entertainment?  Silly trivia games and a guy in tiger suit beating a drum.

NBC was so impressed with the Knights' pre-game presentation that they opted to show the entire thing.  It'll be a hard thing for other teams to match, but they can at least try.  The Sabres have a long way to go to match the Knights both on and off the ice.

And this whole miserable downward spiral began on July 1st, 2007 when the Sabres botched contract negotiations with co-captains Danny Briere and Chris Drury in free agency.  The leadership of the team was gutted, the Sabres got nothing in return and they've been struggling ever since.  General manager Darcy Regier should have been fired on the spot.

Yes, the Sabres won a division title in 2009-10, but since that fateful day in 2007 they've qualified for the playoffs only twice in 11 years and haven't won a playoff series.  After 16 seasons Regier was finally fired in November, 2013.

The one positive thing you can say about the Sabres is that they couldn't have a worse season than the one they just completed.  Things just have to turn around...don't they?  They've always talked a good game, but words are cheap.
