Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers kick off a lengthy tour in support of their new 'Hypnotic Eye' LP this weekend, and they warmed up for their latest dates in high-profile fashion with a July 31 appearance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Kimmel and a studio audience descended upon Petty and the band's rehearsal space in Culver City, CA for the segment, and after joking that none of the folks in the audience were getting a ride home, Kimmel struck up a brief chat with Petty, which you can watch in the video embedded at the top of this post. "We've been here for three weeks, I think. It's nice to have everybody drop by," joked Petty. "We never dreamed this would happen, but here we are, you know?"

Looking ahead to the start of the tour, which begins Aug. 3 in San Diego before moving on to Boise, Petty quipped, "Why would you go anywhere after Boise?" Fortunately for fans, the itinerary doesn't stop there. "We keep going and going," he nodded. "I think it's 40-odd dates in the North America area."

Kimmel then presented Petty with a vinyl copy of 'Hypnotic Eye,' noting that the cover splits the tracks up into Side One, Side Two, and Side Three. "There wasn't enough room for Side Four, but there's a really nice etching on the other side," chuckled Petty, admitting that he wasn't responsible for the etching itself: "I just play, man. I don't know anything else."
