Yes, this is a real thing -- 'World's Ugliest Dog'.

Every year in California they 'crown' a dog who may have birth defects, abnormalities or anything else that may make it stand out. It gives them a chance to be in the spotlight, and it has become a hit in the dog world.

Typically, the owner wins a cash prize of about $1,500! Owners and their pets even travel to California from out of state to compete.

Even though the focus is on ugliness, officials emphasize that the goal of the competition is to “celebrate the spirit and imperfections that make these dogs loveable and adoptable”.

Changes for this year included the combination of the pedigree and mutt groups. Organizers also handed out a Spirit Award for the contestant who presented the strongest history of community service or who faced the most challenges.

Meet this year's winner: Quasi Modo.

Quaasi has some spinal birth defects that has left her slightly hunchbacked, but don't let her fool you -- she lives a good life and she is now...a champion.
