Steve Martin and Edie Brickell's musical Bright Star has earned the pair multiple 2016 Tony Awards nominations.

Bright Star and its cast have earned a total of five nominations, including Best New Musical, Best Leading Actress in a Musical and Best Orchestrations. Additionally, Martin himself received a Best Book of a Musical nomination -- the honor recognizes a musical's non-sung dialogue and storyline -- and Martin and Brickell are both nominated for Best Original Score.

Bright Star first opened on Broadway on March 24, 2016, at the Cort Theatre; previously, it ran at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in late 2014 and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in December of 2015 and January of 2016. The musical was inspired by a true-life event, and Martin tells Vanity Fair that "the end of the first act is so shocking that the audience sits there for a while, stunned. And when they come back from intermission, they’re buzzing.”

In Bright Star, literary editor Alice Murphy forms a relationship with a young soldier, who has just come home from World War II. "Haunted by their unique connection," according to the musical's official website, "Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past — and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives." The musical features more than 20 original pieces by Martin and Brickell; a soundtrack is available for purchase through iTunes.

Martin and Brickell have previously released two albums together. The most recent, So Familiar, debuted in October of 2015.

The 2016 Tony Awards are scheduled to take place on June 12, 2016. The ceremony will be broadcast live from New York City's Beacon Theatre on CBS.
