The origins of "Wagon Wheel" is interesting. It is composed of two different parts. The chorus and melody for the song comes from a demo written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1973 during the Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid sessions. Although never officially released, the Dylan song was released on a bootleg and named after the chorus and its refrain, "Rock Me Mama". The song was left in unfinished form for nearly 2 decades until Ketch Secor of the band Old Crow Medicine Show wrote verses for the song around Dylan's original chorus. Secor's additional lyrics transformed "Rock Me Mama" into "Wagon Wheel".

Of course, you've probably heard of all the other versions of the song over the years including the popular Old Crow Medicine Show's + Hootie and the Blowfish front man turned country singer, Darius Rucker.
