The Arkells and Tragically Hip Take Over the Waterfront
Politicians have been trying to revitalize the Buffalo harbor for years. Saturday may have been the first break through, thanks to a couple bands from Canada.

All indications were that free agent linebacker Paul Posluszny wanted to return to the Buffalo Bills. But money talks, and the Jacksonville Jaguars signed him away from the Bills yesterday according to ESPN. While it leaves a gaping hole at the middle linebacker position, you might argue that there was a gaping hole there all along. Puz, as we liked to call him, never lived up to the potential we were promised.
In the past month, the Sabres have been making national headlines for signings and trades including the acquisitions of highly regarded players Robyn Regehr and Christian Ehrhoff. Yesterday, Buffalo locked up one of their promising young defenseman to a four year, eleven million dollar contract that will keep Andrej Sekera a Sabre until the 2015-2016 season.
With the weather not expected to dip below the high 80's again this week, Western New Yorkers will have to find a way to keep cool. Worst of all is the return of that painful moment when you get up from your leather couch and notice you've left your skin behind. Here's 5 things you can do to beat the heat, besides burying yourself in an air conditioned bedroom with the shades down.
Buffalo is a city known for it's passion for sports of all kinds, especially when their own athletes are involved. Attention and expectations were at an all time high for women's soccer this weekend as the national team faced off against Japan for the coveted World Cup. Unfortunately, the game ended in a fashion Buffalo sports fans know all too well, a heartbreaking loss in penalty kicks. Imagine the Sabres losing the Stanley Cup in a shootout, yeah, that heartbreaking.
He's no Brad Richards, but Ville Leino is another solid acquistion for the Buffalo Sabres, who made yet another move just one day into the free agent period. The signing leaves the Sabres about $5 million under the cap, so a move for Richards is unlikely unless the team sheds some salary. One could argue that the Sabres overpaid for the forward who's only scored 30 goals in the NHL and the player doesn't address the Sabres biggest need, a number one center. Leino is naturally a left winger.
The Buffalo Sabres traded a fourth round pick to the New York Islanders for negotiation rights to free agent defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, and unlike the Islanders (and Vancouver for that matter) the Sabres brass were able to get the deal done. Another sign that it's a new era for the Buffalo Sabres, and free agent players like what they see.
While the much rumored trade for Flames defenseman Robyn Regher dominated talk of the Sabres Draft, don't discount Terry Pegula and Ted Black's first round draft pick Joel Armia of Finland. He's been compared to Teemu Selanne and Mikhail Samuelsson and was a potential Top 10 prospect who fell into the Sabres lap at 16.
You never forget your first love and you can bet you never forget your first title.
The Dallas Mavericks, in business since 1980, have claimed their first NBA title in franchise history by knocking off the vaunted Miami Heat. The Vancouver Canucks, who’ve been in the NHL since 1970, came oh-so-close to hoist
If you don’t know me by now, let me assure you that I will never – ever – cheer for a team from New England. Actually, I hope every team has a big goose egg in the “W” column for the entire season. So, obviously when I was watching the Stanley Cup Final, I was cheering for Vancouver all the way. (Sidebar: I probably would’ve been anyway, since I utterly despise any team in the East who’s not the Sabres.)
Imagine if Buffalo had lost the Sabres? What damage that would have done to the pride of Western New York. Now imagine that they had been gone for 15 years.
