With the constant overexposure to media throughout a typical day, sometimes all you want is a little peace and quiet. But, you might rethink that wish after sitting in a room that’s 99.99% sound absorbent.

Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis has an “anechoic chamber” that holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s quietest place. While that might sound like the perfect place to get your meditation on, it turns out if you stay in there long enough, you’ll start hallucinating. In fact, the longest duration of time spent in the room is 45 minutes.

Company founder and president Steven Orfield, who only managed 30 minutes, explained:

‘When it’s quiet, ears will adapt. The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You’ll hear your heart beating, sometimes you can hear your lungs, hear your stomach gurgling loudly. In the anechoic chamber, you become the sound.’

Whirlpool and Harley Davidson use the lab to make their products quieter while NASA trains its astronauts there.

If all of Orfield’s claims are true, then deaf people are straight up hallucinating at all times?  Maybe this explains Jason Russell’s naked breakdown?
