One North Tonawanda veteran is raising awareness about veteran suicide by travelling 422 miles...in his wheelchair.

Joshua Geartz heads to Indiana tomorrow to start his trek.  He received an honorable discharge after serving in the Army from 1999 to 2004.  In 2003 he was hit by an IED, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

According to the VA, 20 veterans die each day from suicide, and Geartz struggled with thoughts of ending his own life.  That's when he found Songwriting with Soldiers, a group that pairs award-winning songwriters with veterans to write songs about their experiences.  Geartz says the 3-day-retreat with them saved his life.

Tomorrow, he leaves Indiana on his wheelchair, travelling all the way -- all 422 miles -- to the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, in an effort to raise money and awareness.  He hopes to complete the journey within 30 days.
