I live right near this crossing; and as soon as the light was active, I was grateful yet nervous.

I'm grateful because I've biked this new "rails to trails" path, and crossing Sheridan's six lanes of traffic (plus turning lanes) can be pretty terrifying if you're not crossing at a light.

I'm nervous though because since this "HAWK" light (an acronym for High Intensity Activated Crosswalk) is the first of its kind in New York state so not everyone knows how to use it.

It's not too complicated, but it IS new so it's worth the reminder.

  • Flashing YELLOW means use caution.
  • Flashing RED is treated as a STOP SIGN.
  • SOLID RED is treated as a RED LIGHT.  FULL STOP.
