I feel like we hear this every holiday, but more people are traveling for the holiday than ever before. AAA reports that over 112.5 million folks will be traveling for the year-end holidays, which is the most on record. Whether it's to Grandmother's house for Hawaii people will be hitting the road or the sky to celebrate with friends a family. This is up 4.4% from last year and the most since AAA has started tracking holiday travel.

AAA even broke it down by the form of travel:

  • Automobiles: More Americans will travel by car this holiday season than ever before. The 102.1 million people expected to pack up their cars for road trips is 4.4 percent higher than last year. It is the most since AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2001.
  • Planes: The 6.7 million people who will travel by air this year is the highest level since in 15 years and is 4.2 percent more than last year.
  • Trains, Buses, and Cruise Ships: Travel across these sectors will increase by 4 percent, with a total of 3.7 million passengers.

The good news for those hitting the road is that AAA is reporting the national average for gas is falling, which could factor into the decision of holiday travel.

If you're traveling by air the busiest days will be the 22nd, 23rd, and 26th while the 24th and 25th are generally lighter days to travel.

However, according to INRIX, the worst day to travel is Thursday, December 20th. If you're traveling on that day they say it's best to adjust your times to avoid the peak traffic commutes.
