An ‘Avengers’ sequel is happening. That much is set in stone. Beyond that, there’s nothing but questions, the largest being whether or not director Joss Whedon will return to a franchise that raced past the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office and has a decent shot at knocking ‘Avatar’ off its perch as the highest-grossing film of all time.

“You know, I’m very torn,” Whedon told the L.A. Times before his film even reached theaters. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

I’m sure Marvel will think they’re cool, as well, so long as ‘The Avengers 2’ rakes in as much dough as its predecessor. That being said, as impossible as this sounds, sequels usually tend to do better than their initial installments. Could you imagine ‘Avengers 2’ outperforming Whedon’s film at the box office? That would be staggering.

Whedon’s decision likely will come down to time: How much time will he have to spend on preparing and directing the sequel; and how busy will he be on other projects when Marvel finally is ready to put this one before a camera. As you know, Marvel has Thor, Iron Man and Captain America sequels in the works at the moment, and a second ‘Avengers’ won’t happen until they wrap.

Whedon will very likely come back, that enough time will pass between now and when they’re ready to shoot that he’ll have the itch to get this band back together and follow up on his groundbreaking, record-setting works. But we won’t know for some time yet, so hold tight and let’s see how it shakes out.
