Is Driving with a Full Bladder More Dangerous Than Driving Drunk?

ThinkStock

If you like to keep up to date with the latest research in peeing, well, urine luck. We’ve got news. According to an award-winning study, having to really pee can be a worse impairment than drinking while driving.

The study called ‘The Effect of Acute Increase in Urge to Void on Cognitive Function in Healthy Adults‘ (aka ‘How Pee-Pee Makes the Brain Turn to Poopie’) was published in ‘Neurourology and Urodynamics’ and its lead researcher, Dr. Peter Snyder, explained in a recent interview with Jalopnik just how the need for speed effects the decisions we make behind the wheel of an automobile.

“In the case of the urge to urinate,” Snyder explained “we found when people are at their top threshold of pain, when they can’t stand it anymore, the level of impairment on reason and problem solving is equivalent to about a 0.05 blood alcohol level.”

Snyder also explain that the urge to empty the bladder has nothing to do with concentration and the mind. You can’t “think about something else” like your father told you every car ride because the jerk just didn’t want to stop.

So what is the best prevention to driving with a full tank? Peeing before you hit the road, and not letting it get to the point where it’s an emergency. Another good idea is avoiding the extra large sizes of coffee, soda and Pabst Blue Ribbon.
