After 35 years of togetherness and weathering what could have been a career-crippling storm when original singer Michael Hutchence committed suicide in 1997, INXS are calling it and day and are breaking up. Drummer Jon Farriss made the announcement mid-set at the band's show in Perth, Australia, yesterday (Nov. 11.)

Farriss told the assembled crowd that the performance, an opening gig for Matchbox Twenty, would be the band's last, according to Rolling Stone.

"I'm getting teary," the skinsman said before the band launched into 'Need You Tonight,' one of its biggest smash hits.

Farriss formed the band with his siblings Andrew and Tim, as well as Hutchence, in 1977 in Sydney. They enjoyed massive international success in the 1980s, on the back of hits like the aforementioned 'Need You Tonight' and 'Never Tear Us Apart.'

The band didn't split even after Hutchence's death in 1997, despite a period of dormancy. Instead, they relied on several singers during the tumultuous period, and while they never did recapture their former glory, they kept going.

Jon Stevens sang lead for a time, and then J.D. Fortune nabbed the gig by winning the reality show 'Rock Star: INXS.' He performed with the band sporadically before being replaced by Ciaran Gibbin in September of last year. The circumstances of Hutchence's death remain a pervasive part of rock lore, with rumors abounding that auto-erotic asphyxiation was the cause.
