We all knew it was too good to be true, but we wanted to believe! Last week, a video was all over the interwebs showing many celebrities using a hoverboard like in the ‘Back to the Future’ movies. Tony Hawk, Moby, Terrell Owens and Dr. Emmet Brown himself, Christopher Lloyd, all helped promote the new product from a company called HUVrTech.
Even though we all wanted to have the technology of the future under our feet, a lot of us could sense something was amiss. The thing we didn’t know was why this ploy was pulled on us. Many speculated that it may have been for a new ‘Back to the Future’ movie or for a new Tony Hawk video game.
It turned out that it was all a prank put on by the people at Funny or Die.
Hawk apologized for pranking us all and had this to say about the video:
I was recently invited to participate in a prank video “revealing” the reality of hoverboards. It seemed harmless and fun, but the video spread and it was wildly misleading. This was not a promotion for a new movie or videogame, nor did I get paid (unrelated: I am releasing a game for mobile devices relatively soon). My reward was riding in a DeLorean with Doc, and pretending to be a stuntman for BTTF2. – Tony
With the video Funny or Die also said:
Funny Or Die recently teamed up with a group of celebrities for an elaborate prank to convince the world hoverboards were real and that a company called HUVr Tech had invented them. Sadly, we were lying. The great promise of Back to the Future II has not been fulfilled … yet. And for that, we truly are sorry.
They also say that if you go to their Facebook page, you could win your own (non-functional) hoverboard signed by all the people in the video.
