So there you are, having sex or watching porn (oh, don’t act like you never do) when suddenly you’re hit with a blinding headache. What gives?

Dr. Amy Gelfand, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, says there are two types of headaches associated with sexual activity. The most common type happens after orgasm with someone of the 3D variety, but the other type progresses slowly along with heightened sexual arousal — like when you’re watching two girls and the world’s luckiest pizza delivery boy.

Regardless, “primary sex headaches,” as they’re called, are a medical mystery. Gelfand says some docs think muscle contractions in the neck and jaw during sex may somehow trigger the headaches, while others have suggested they occur because blood vessels in the head are “abnormally reactive to sexual activity.”

Such headaches strike one percent of the population at some point in their lives, usually men. Taking a combination of 400 milligrams of ibuprofen and 500 milligrams of acetaminophen about half an hour before you get bizzay (with either a person or a remote control) is a start. But if the problem persists, you should see a doctor — no matter how awkward that conversation will probably be.
