The new Ghostbusters remains untested at the box office, but that isn’t about to stop Sony Pictures Animation from busting the franchise wide open. Realer than The Real Ghostbusters, more extreme than Extreme Ghostbusters, the paranormal paladins are headed back to TV with a new animated Ecto Force series sending the Ghostbusters into the far-flung future.

Announced alongside Sony Pictures Animation’s current slate, the 2018-targeted Ghostbusters: Ecto Force is described as “younger-skewing” (via The Hollywood Reporter), with the focus on “a new generation of Ghostbusters in the year 2050 who capture ghosts around the world with help from local teams—and some very cool gear!” The series is said to be part of the “Ghosbusters cinematic universe,” though what, if any involvement that implies for the films remains to be seen.

Ghostbusters: Ecto Force will mark the third animated incarnation of the classic 1984 movie, following 1986 series The Real Ghostbusters (so named for a rights dispute), a spinoff based on Slimer!, and 1997's Extreme Ghostbusters, focusing on an all-new team. No details of the Ecto Force team are yet available.

It’s a long way off, enough that Sony likely wants to test Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters in theaters before fully diving into the franchise, but how might the 2050 Ecto Force setting change things?
