Freddie Mercury Biopic Likely Dead, Thanks to Sacha Baron Cohen
The Freddie Mercury biopic is one of those recent projects trapped in development hell. Though funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen of ‘Borat’ fame was attached to the lead role for some time, he has since dropped out, leaving the project to its likely demise, according to the film’s writer.
The BBC received word from Peter Morgan (‘Rush’), who stated the Freddie Mercury movie is “probably not going to happen,” due to Cohen’s departure. The actor was tentatively involved with the film for a while, though an official announcement was made only last year, with his role evasion occurring only a couple months ago. Production was hoped to begin in late 2013 with ‘Les Miserables’ director Tom Hooper and Robert De Niro (as a producer).
However, Digital Spy recently reported that “the team” claims the film is “still very much alive.” Queen previously offered its full support in bringing this biopic to life, including forking over the rights to use songs from its repertoire. Though without the right man to portray the legendary rocker, the project will fail regardless.
