Facebook Has A New Organ Donation Tool

Mark Zuckerberg wants to use Facebook to help those languishing at the tail end of organ donation lists.

So, starting today, the close to 200 million Facebook users in the United States and the United Kingdom will have the option to add that they are organ donors on their Facebook timeline.

Those who are not officially on their state’s organ donor roll will also be given instructions on how to sign up.

“Facebook is really about communicating and telling stories… We think that people can really help spread awareness of organ donation and that they want to participate in this to their friends,” Zuckerberg explained during an interview with Good Morning America. “And that can be a big part of helping solve the crisis that’s out there.”

Zuckerberg added that conversations with his pre-med girlfriend and his friendship with late Apple founder Steve Jobs, whose life was extended after getting a liver transplant, led him to pursue this organ donation initiative.

Currently, most people declare their organ donation status when they get or renew a driver’s license. Experts believe this suppresses the rate of organ donation because the DMV is the wrong place to have people think about their mortality.

Dr. Andrew Cameron, Transplant Surgeon at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, believes Facebook’s organ donation tool will make a big difference: “I think it’s possible that we will see an impact over the next couple of years where we would imagine eliminating the transplant waiting list,” he told GMA.

So would you be willing to put your organ donation status on Facebook?
