Dave Grohl can now add Elton John to his growing list of famous collaborators. The classic rocker has joined Queens of the Stone Age, with whom Grohl is drumming while Foo Fighters are on hiatus, to record a song on their upcoming album. During an interview the two indicated that the style is very different from what fans have come to expect from the famous piano player.

Grohl has been filling in as host for Chelsea Handler on ‘Chelsea Lately’ on E!. Elton John and Grohl have become friends, and both expressed a mutual admiration for the other as the segment opened. The timing to get Elton John in studio just worked out.

“I was in Vegas and I flew back to L.A. and Engelbert Humperdinck had written me a very sweet letter and asked me to sing a duet with him,” John explains. “Then I drove three blocks and went from Engelbert to Queens Of The Stone Age, which was a bit of a mindf**k.”

After the 65-year-old praised Grohl’s drumming, Grohl expressed disappointment that his kit was tucked away during their time in the studio together. “I was in a closet the entire time, I couldn’t even see you,” Grohl says in the interview below.

“At that time you were out of the closet,” the openly gay singer fired back. The audience loved it.

There is no indication as to when the new Queens of the Stone Age album will be released, although rumors point to an early-2013 release. Grohl has been more than a friend to classic rock in recent months. His Sound City Players all-star band features John Fogerty and Stevie Nicks among others. He paired with Paul McCartney at the 12-12-12 benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims, and in April he’ll be helping induct Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
