David VanLanding, a singer whose eclectic career included multiple stints with the Michael Schenker Group, has died after succumbing to injuries sustained in a car accident yesterday.

News of VanLanding's death was confirmed by family members, who've begun reaching out to fans on his Facebook page. "My uncle passed away around 4AM [Nov. 17] in a collision with a garbage truck in Clearwater, Fla.," wrote his niece Blair. "He was an inspiration to me through everything I have accomplished with music, and one of the greatest men I could have ever hoped to have known. We will all miss him dearly and remember him for the man he was and all that he stood for. Please keep my family in your prayers."

Queensrÿche singer Todd La Torre, who followed in VanLanding's footsteps as a singer for the band Crimson Glory, has posted his own tribute, saying he's "beyond devastated" and calling VanLanding one of his best friends. "He was full of life, love, and laughter," wrote La Torre. "He is notably known for singing with Michael Schenker, and has a lifelong professional music career, but those who knew him best know him as a loving friend, husband, and sibling. My deepest condolences to his wife and family."

While never a household name, VanLanding remained steadily active throughout his career, teaching voice and fronting cover bands to keep his vocals in shape between touring and recording gigs. He was also tireless in his efforts to aid friends and loved ones in need, as demonstrated by a recent Facebook post asking fans to follow him in donating to a fundraiser supporting bassist Tony MacAlpine's fight against colon cancer — and his own "Rockin' 4or Rhonda" campaign, which sought to raise money to help defray the costs of his ex-wife's battle against breast cancer.

Fans are asked to keep an eye on VanLanding's Facebook page, where his family has pledged to "make an announcement once more details are known and arrangements are made." More information about VanLanding's life and music, along with links to purchase some of his recordings, can be found at his official site.
