The inmates are definitely running this asylum.

Corrections officers at the only American Samoa jail are accused of letting the jail birds leave the grounds to go on beer and food runs. A police search of the Territorial Correctional facility in July found beer in an inmate's cell, sparking an investigation.

While trying to find out how the hell inmates got a hold of alcoholic beverages, authorities discovered that the COs were sending them to a nearby store, sans supervision. One of the beer runners is actually serving 40 months for assaulting someone with a machete. Yeah, we'd feel comfortable sending someone with a violent streak to nab beer and snacks for us. We wouldn't worry that they'd pee in our Heineken or kill a store clerk or anything like that.

We're left wondering why the hell the inmates came back when granted unsupervised leave? Eh, maybe they have it better than we realize.

Officers Fiti Aina and Rocky Tua were charged this week with aiding the escape of a prisoner, permitting escape and for being public servants acceding to corruption.

One of the not-so-smart inmates told investigators that he bought beer for another inmate and that he bought chips and cookies for Tua. Maybe Tua can employ the junk food defense and blame the sugar for letting inmates do whatever they wanted and treating them like indentured servants.

Aina and Tua were each held on $10,000 bail.
