There were plenty of people wishing Paul McCartney a happy 70th birthday Monday and several musical tributes along the way.

One of them took place Monday night at London’s Palladium theater, where Soundgarden‘s Chris Cornell continued his ‘Songbook’ solo tour. The musician has been playing acoustically, stripping back many of the songs from his own solo and Soundgarden catalogs with a few covers thrown in for good measure.

With Monday being McCartney’s birthday, Cornell used the occasion to salute the singer. He told the crowd, “He’s 70. He was knighted. You know why he was knighted? He paid taxes … which I’m not sure is worth it. People call me sir sometimes, and I didn’t pay s— … but I love him though.”

Fan filmed footage of Cornell’s set closer, the Beatles‘ ‘A Day in the Life,’ has found its way online. For it being only Cornell and a single guitar, the musician made a rather ambitious choice, especially considering the middle breakdown, but he ably pulled it off with a fast strumming hand that gave the track the psychedelic frenzy it needed.

NME reports that during his set, he also pulled out covers of Led Zeppelin‘s ‘Thank You,’ Pink Floyd‘s ‘Comfortably Numb,’ and Michael Jackson‘s ‘Billie Jean.’

In addition to Cornell, Paul Weller released a cover of ‘Birthday‘ as a one-day only download, Fiona Apple performed ‘Let Me Roll It’ on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and the U.K. chapter of PETA sent Sir Paul an animal-themed birthday card.
