31 Years Ago: Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Nebraska’ Album Released

When Bruce Springsteen started recording a batch of new songs to a four-track tape machine in his New Jersey bedroom in January 1982, he wasn’t planning to release an album. The acoustic demos were to be used as guidelines for the E Street Band, who would bring their epic heft to the two dozen or so songs Springsteen had recently written. But something happened along the way to Springsteen’s sixth album: The more he listened to the bare, stark songs on the cassette he carried around, the more he thought this was how they were supposed to sound.

45 Years Ago: Ringo Rejoins the Beatles

On Aug. 22, 1968, Ringo Starr had enough of his bandmates' constant bickering. So he packed up his drumsticks and walked out of the Beatles' chaotic recording sessions for their upcoming double album, 'The Beatles' (better known as 'The White Album'). And he planned to stay away for good.

Rod Stewart, ‘Rarities’ – Album Review

Rod Stewart has taken his punches over the years. First in the late '70s for his disco hit 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' and most recently for his series of albums featuring a bunch of old songs your grandma and grandpa used to get busy to back in the day. Paul McCartney, ‘New’ – Song Review

The last time Paul McCartney released a new song (not counting the two originals that showed up on 2012's standards collection 'Kisses on the Bottom'), he was getting all reflective. Even the title of his last album of all original songs, 'Memory Almost Full,' mused on the passing of time and growing old.

45 Years Ago: The Byrds Release ‘Sweetheart of the Rodeo’

Commercially, the Byrds weren't exactly at the top of their game in 1968. Their fifth album, 'The Notorious Byrd Brothers,' released in January, topped out at No. 47, and its only single, 'Goin' Back,' barely cracked the Top 90. Plus, the band's revolving door spit out cofounder David Crosby midway through the recording sessions.

The Beach Boys, ‘Made in California’ – Album Review

The Beach Boys' 2012 reunion album was released during the group's 50th-anniversary celebration. But more than just marking a milestone, 'That's Why God Made the Radio' strapped itself into a time capsule and did its best to rocket itself back to 1962 or at least to 1967 (or maybe 1972).
