‘Suicide Squad’ Review: The DC Movie Universe’s Darkest Night

If you liked the scene in Batman v Superman where Bruce Wayne watched YouTube videos about the future members of the Justice League, you'll love Suicide Squad. Instead of just one scene of plot-stopping fan service, Suicide Squad delivers an entire first act of soul-deadening exposition. The movie spends nearly 30 story-free minutes with a Machiavellian bureaucrat while she sits in a restaurant discussing a top secret personnel file. Here is Deadshot, the world’s greatest assassin; this is Harley Quinn, the Joker’s psychotic girlfriend. Oh, and have you heard about Captain Boomerang? And on and on and on.

Sally Field Didn’t Enjoy Playing Aunt May in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Because of all the excitement around the new Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War trailer, I decided to take a look back at the two Amazing Spider-Man movies from 2012 and 2014 directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield. I was not a fan of the ASM reboot at the time, but I love Spidey and was admittedly a huge supporter of Sam Raimi’s interpretation of the franchise. It seemed possible that I hadn’t given the Amazing movies a fair shake.

If You Haven’t Seen the Coen Brothers’ Short Films, You’re Missing Out

This is a good week. Not because tomorrow is Thank a Mailman Day (Thank you, mailmen!) and not because Saturday is Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day (Thanks, whoever thought of this extremely unhealthy idea!). No, this is a good week because there’s a new Coen brothers movie. It’s called Hail, Caesar! and it finds the Coens working in full-on comedy mode, telling the story of a single day at a ’50s Hollywood studio named Capitol Pictures, where a drunken movie star (George Clooney) gets kidnapped and the company fixer (Josh Brolin) has to figure out how to get him back. You can read my full review here, but here’s the tl;dr version: It’s funny and awesome.
