In the Dark Knight Rises there's a point where Batman tells Commissioner Gordon that we can all be heroes, even if it's just putting a warm coat over a boy's shoulder. Yesterday, Bale did something similar when he visited the surviving victims of the theater shooting in Colorado.
Heart may be the most disrespected band in the world. I hope it’s not because the band is fronted by the Wilson Sisters, two women.
We’ve long known that women don’t get a fair shot in the workplace, earning far less than their male counterparts, but having seen Heart steal the show when they opened for Def Leppard last summer, it’s hard to believe these ladies still don’t sell out major arenas as headliners. Tonight they'll be at Artpark, and it blows my mind that you can get tickets to see one of the most legendary rock bands of all time for just 10 bucks ($5 if you bought them in advance).
Who knows what effect the Colorado shooting had on weekend box office numbers, but the Dark Knight Rises still reigned supreme. The numbers were slightly down from the $180-$200 million projection, with the movie raking in $160 million over the weekend. If you had went to the midnight screening in Orchard Park you probably would have expected more. The parking lot was packed and all but one show was sold out, rare for Buffalo movie premieres.
Car crashes are among the leading causes of death in the U.S., but according to a CDC report, Buffalo is actually pretty safe. Where you live affects how much danger you are in, and Buffalo fares well.
This is one of the most chilling stories to come out of the shooting in Colorado. Jessica Ghawi Redfield, a victim of Friday's massacre, narrowly missed last month's shooting in Toronto that killed one person. An eerie feeling came over her that day. She left the Eaton Center with her sushi and poutine minutes before a gunmen opened fire on the crowd just a few feet from where she was sitting minutes before. She wrote about the experience in her last blog, a strange twist of fate and eerie coincidence that forshadowed exactly what we are thinking about her and the victims of this senseless tragedy.
It's easy to understand how movie-goers in Aurora, Colorado were confused when 24 year-old James Holmes entered the midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises and began shooting people. The movie has some intense and violent opening scenes, even at the local opening people were dressed like characters from the trilogy. At least 12 people are dead and 50 injured and unfortunately the incident played out like a scene from the movie. Only Batman wasn't there to stop him.
Through the years, I have touted a theory that all great hard rock can be traced back to legendary metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio. I called it my "Wheel of Dio." As a proud fan of RJD, I gave him all the credit, but in reality, the wheel centers around two bands: Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.
Jack FM's Ticket Thingy express rolls on with more free tickets to Nickelback whether you like it or not. You told us you don't want Nickelback tickets, but you lied (if you saw how many calls we got the first time we did this you'd be shocked). So it's a Nickelback Ticket Thingy, Part Deux starting tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (Nickelback is from Canada so all promotions have to be in English and French. It's the law).
Ben Folds Five called it a day at the height of their career, shortly after releasing the smash hit "Brick" and a great alternative album called Whatever and Ever Amen, the band decided to go their seperate ways in one of the friendlier splits in music history. Twelve years later, just like the Blues Brother, they're putting the band back together and the reunion show is coming to Western New York at Kleinhans on October 5.
