Dale Mussen

I've been doing this radio thing for 40 years now. I've been a part of the morning show since 1986. Ever since I was a kid, I've loved to read. I read the newspaper each day nearly cover to cover, nearly everything except the classifieds. I’m a lifelong Bills and Sabres fan and I've been a regular in the press box of both teams since 1979. You’d think in all that time one of those teams would win a championship! Four cracks at it for the Bills and two for the Sabres and they came up short each time. I was born in Buffalo and raised in Tonawanda. I went to college at Niagara University and since Clay went to Canisius, we get to tease each other twice each year when the Eagles and Griffs meet to play basketball. I began buying records when I was just a kid and have held on to that vinyl all these years. I have a lot of old 45’s in their original sleeves. I bet a lot of millennials have no idea what I’m talking about. Another thing I began doing when I was a kid was riding a bike and I haven’t given that up either. In addition to radio another thing I enjoy doing is officiating high school football. I’m entering my 32nd year doing that.

A Local Event In History You Probably Didn’t Know

It’s some local history that most people don’t know about. People who even live near where it happened may have heard about it, but probably don’t know the details. It was the worst railroad disaster to that point in American history and it happened just outside the Village of Angola when the last car of the Buffalo-bound Lake Shore Express derailed while crossing Big Sister Creek.

Bet You Didn’t Know These Facts About Amherst [BUFFALO: THEN AND NOW]

If you were around in 1798, you could have bought land in Amherst pretty cheap -- try $2 an acre! That’s what the Holland Land Company paid. Joseph Ellicott was one of the company’s agents, and his biggest job was to build roads to attract people from New England to Western New York.

Don’t Be Fooled by Hurricane Sandy’s Category One Classification

We keep hearing that Sandy is a Category One hurricane, but at the same time, we're told not to treat it lightly. It could be because of the way hurricanes are rated in the first place.

It’s called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale. It was developed in 1971 by civil engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Bob Simpson, who was the director of the National Hurricane Center at the time. The idea was to give the public an idea of the destructive force of a hurricane in a simple way, a lot like the Richter Scale rates earthquakes.
