’80 Hair Flashbacks — What Were We Thinking?

I’ve been known to tease my tresses and use massive amounts of hair spray as a self-proclaimed “’80s reject,” but the results are tame in comparison to — dun dun dun — ’80s hair!

Unwilling to let go just yet of our Awesome ’80s Weekend and inspired by last Friday’s Def Leppard, Poison and Lita Ford show at Darien Lake — back in the day, they all rocked gloriously big ’80s hair; the number of cans of Aquanet they must have gone through was probably quite impressive! — here’s a look at some of the radically embarrassing moused, gelled and permed ‘dos that made the decade great.

I don’t even know what you would call this hairstyle other than an epic lion’s mane. I think Cher must have been a huge fan of David Bowie’s hair in Labyrinth.

Her bangs are pretty poufy even now, but back in the day, Madonna rocked the “closer-to-God” bangs (a.k.a., mall bangs), which were extra crispy. I can smell the Dep and Aquanet all the way over here.

Punk was huge in the ’80s, and New Wave singer Annabella Lwin of Bow Wow Wow sported an awesome mohawk mullet. I have hair envy, I have to admit!

The Cure frontman Robert Smith’s iconic rat’s nest of hair — a little less styled, but still just as awesome, today — inspired millions of mopey teenagers in the ’80s. “Friday I’m In Love”…with Robert Smith’s hair!
