Did anyone else realize that Thursday marked the 20th anniversary of Super Bowl XXV? It was brought to my attention bright and early that morning. For the rest of the day, I just wanted to sit and weep.

While I was only 11 on that fateful January day, I know exactly where I was, who I was with and how I felt. And I can remember the exact moment when my heart broke in two, never to be the same.

The thing is, even with all the heartache, I wouldn’t trade it. (Let me clarify – yes, I would trade it for a win, but if that wasn’t an option, I’d take the “Wide Right.”) I feel like that game, that very moment, has made us Buffalonians who we are. It’s made us strong, humble and united. Like a scorned lover, we move on, cautiously optimistic, finding comfort with those who share our pain.

So, my fellow mourners, let us bow our heads in memory of the game that wasn’t. And be hopeful that Scott Norwood makes a cameo for those pretentious Steelers next week.
